Class Features

A bard is trained to use the Perform skill to create magical effects on those around him, including himself if desired. He can use this ability for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + his Charisma modifier. At each level after 1st a bard can use bardic performance for 2 additional rounds per day. Each round, the bard can produce any one of the types of bardic performance that he has mastered, as indicated by his level. Starting a performance is standard action, maintaining it is free action. Current amount: 8/day.

Countersong: Counter magic effects that depend on sound (not just spells with verbal components.) Each round he makes a Perform (percussion or sing) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use this check result if that is higher than its rolled saving throw. If a creature in range is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous sonic or language-dependent magical attack, it gains another saving throw each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the bard’s skill check result for the save. Countersong doesn’t work on effects without saves. Countersong relies on audible components.

Distraction: Counter magic effects that depend on sight. Each round he makes a Perform (oratory) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard) that is affected by an illusion (pattern/figment) magical attack may use this check result if that is higher than its rolled saving throw. If a creature in range is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous illusion (pattern/figment) magical attack, it gains another saving throw each round it sees the Distraction, but it must use the bard’s skill check result for the save. Distraction doesn’t work on effects without saves. Distraction relies on visual components.

Chant of Perfect Recall: An impervious messenger can spend 1 round of his bardic performance to commit something to memory. This ability functions exactly as per memorize page, but the impervious messenger is the only recipient and he requires only 1 round to commit a single page to memory. An impervious messenger can commit additional pages worth of material to memory by using additional rounds of his bardic performance, but he can never memorize more than half his total bard level in pages (minimum 1).

Inspire Courage: Can use performance to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), an ally must be able to perceive the bard’s performance. Receive +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 5th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1, max of +4. Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Can use audible or visual components, must choose which component to use when starting his performance. Current bonus: +1.

Spells

He can cast any spell he knows without preparing it ahead of time. Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music). DC 10 + spell level + charisma modifier.

Cantrips: DC 14
Lullaby Makes subject drowsy (–5 on Perception checks, –2 on Will saves against sleep), range 100 ft + 10 ft/level, 10-ft radius burst, concentration + 1 round/level.
Mage Hand 5-pound telekinesis.
Prestidigitation Performs minor tricks.
Spark Ignites flammable objects.

Level 1: DC 15
Cure light wounds Cures 1d8 damage + 1/level (max +5).
Disguise self Changes your appearance, 10 min/level.

Personality
A liar and charmer, Cinn rarely sees the point of taking things too seriously. Which isn’t to say that he doesn’t take things seriously, he simply doesn’t often take them too seriously. It is an important distinction and thankfully he is very good at explaining to others when something should be taken more or less seriously. He is even better at spinning tales, weaving songs together or joining a rousing melody with drumming on whatever surface is available. And truly, most rumours about him being a lying bastard are highly exaggerated due to his heritage. His father, for instance, was definitely married to his mother when he was born. That the marriage didn’t survive his birth is obviously the fault of the adult male, who even admitted that in a truly inspiring moment of remorse in his dying moments. Cinn will happily share the story or song with you, if so desired, for truly a tale that heartwarming deserved a song to celebrate it. And if, at some point, you start feeling inspired to share a drink, meal or a few coins, well… it would be rude to stop such an enlightening moment from affecting the one experiencing it. And being rude is only suitable at certain times and places, most of which are correctly identified by Cinn and his audience. If not, there is always another tomorrow.

Background
Cinn always knew he was different, because people used to gasp and back away whenever he came out to be closer to his mother. They also made odd gestures and said words that didn’t make sense to him at that age, but which were repeated often enough that he recognised them. His mother tended to become sad afterwards, but sometimes she would become angry. Just usually not at him. He barely remembered her yelling at him when he’d been careless and she never raised her hand against him. Something which, perhaps, made it harder to understand why his last memory of her was her hitching a ride on a farmer’s cart and laughingly denying that she knew him to the driver, despite seeing him standing there. He was barely old enough to realise he was being abandoned and certainly not mature enough to understand why.

It took decades on the streets and several harsh experiences with his father before he could think back on his childhood without feeling spikes of hurt fuelled rage. He spend his nights in whatever place seemed safe enough and did whatever he needed to survive another day. He learnt how to lie and talk his way out of trouble more often than into trouble, while slowly discovering which areas of the town weren’t just safe for an hour or two, but could be seen as something like ‘home’.

Shelyn’s Temple was such a place, where he not only was allowed to sing, but could learn new songs and melodies. It wasn’t a building where he could truly afford to be at peace, but he could lose himself for a few hours in the music and be protected from the elements. It wasn’t that difficult to dodge the religious questions and certain aspects of their faith were agreeable enough to tolerate the occasional sermon. Redroof was even easier, if you knew how to behave yourself in the sight of the right people, with plenty of others who were ‘different’ like him. Not that this made them friendly, but most of them were at least less cruel with their words and actions. Aria Park was a dangerous lure, but not particularly safe or welcoming. It was, however, filled with all kinds of music, performances and nature. He would eventually start considering it ‘home’ but that wasn’t until long after he watched his father stumble around, crippled by old age, and started finding peace with himself. But back then it was at rowdy taverns where he was the most relaxed, despite the potential for tavern brawls or drinks turning someone ugly. The rousing call of the drums was liberating in a way that singing could not be and barely anyone had aspirations of ‘saving him’. He didn’t need saving.

He first met Tharhar when he was slightly drunk, but still sober enough to be openly curious about what the new smith was up to in the middle of the night, instead of trying to break in to find out without being seen. Given how absorbed Tharhar was with his work, it might not have made a huge difference. Except that the other probably wouldn’t have appreciated being startled by an unseen person suddenly asking questions, whereas he was only slightly annoyed with being disturbed by a visible tiefling asking the same questions.

One late night conversation led to another and before Cinn realised it he was being ‘saved’. Being saved by someone who was younger than him was amusing, despite the same thing likely having infuriated or insulted him just two decades earlier. It helped that there was no sexual angle attached, or an overbearing parental attitude. It was more as if he’d suddenly gained an older brother who didn’t want to be too present, but gruffly encouraged his younger sibling to invest in a more stable life and stop fooling around. Or a concerned friend who didn’t want to admit that he was concerned. Or another lonely soul who did what was needed during the day, while seeking solace in his art by night.

And truly, it hardly mattered how others would describe it or what their motives were. Somehow, despite their differences and mixed feelings, they build a connection based on mutual respect, trust and the few similarities they shared. They were different, but the same in enough ways to connect and find stability. And with stability came further understanding, confidence and peace. And, for the first time in his life, a place to truly focus on learning when he needed it. The forge was noisy, warm and almost never deserted, but it was a place where he wouldn’t be chased away or attacked. And in the unlikely case that would change, he would have a fierce protector right there besides him. He still didn’t need saving, but it was a nice change. One he welcomed.

Description
Cinn’s most remarkable feature is his long and slender white tail, which often moves around him and frequently serves as an extra hand when handling too many things. While jugglers certainly have an admirable skill, it is not one that he has ever been tempted to learn. The movements of his tail are also not inspired by restlessness, but by his thinking of melodies or the cadence within a spoken story. Of course, to anyone but him his tail simply moves in a restless or annoyed way, much alike a flicking cat’s tail. He was not born with horns, wings or hooves, although his nails do require frequent trimming to avoid little accidents now and then. His long, silver white hair is kept loose and apparently neglected, except on days when he wants to make a better impression. His hair might end up being braided, or restrained in a tail, or simply combed more than once a day during such times. His slightly pointed ears and orange eyes compliment his look, despite perhaps not everyone agreeing with this in the same way.

When he’s moving around on his own desire, he favours simple clothing that grants him the freedom to move around. Both due to not being restricted, as not standing out too much from the other folk in the street. He’s not rich so there’s no reason to appear as if he is, and plenty of reason to avoid giving that impression. He does have a more flashy outfit for when he’s out to have a good time or entertain others, but even then he prefers clothes that suit him above an outfit that shouts for attention. His most recent successes have allowed him to be a bit more comfortable with spending money on his clothes, while still being new enough that he’s cautious about how much to spend on what. Success is fleeting, especially in times when even the opera is closed.
